News carts like this were common fixtures in Chicago during the 1970s. They were used to haul giant stacks of newspapers between delivery trucks and the newsstands which were often inside ‘L’ stations. Three wheels were necessary to keep them from slipping on icy sidewalks. Also, those newspapers got pretty heavy. I had a job selling newspapers when I was 12. Newspapers sold for seven cents back then. I got to keep two cents from every sale.
