I saw these two men together frequently in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood in the mid-1970s and photographed them several times. The man with the corn cob pipe looked after the hydrocephalic man.They lived in this apartment building. Note the sign scrawled onto the stone on the left. It says “No seating on the steps.” Many people in Uptown during that era could neither read nor write. I have dozens of model release forms from Uptown signed with X’s.
