I found this man lounging on the street across from the Chelsea Hotel on Wilson near Sheridan in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood during the mid-1970s. He loved to have his picture taken depsite the fact that he was missing many of his teeth. Here he poses with his pipe, a walkie talkie that looked like it came from Radio Shack, and a hat with an improbable number of buttons on it. I never did learn whom he was talking to on the walkie talkie. I call this shot Pipe Dream because the subject is smoking a pipe and the other elements of the image are so improbable that I feel as though I’m in a dream.
