I was walking down Wilson just west of the El on 9/5/74 when a man and a screaming woman spilled out of a bar just in front of me. I think the fight started in the bar. The bartender must have called the police before ejecting the couple because the police arrived within seconds.
This shot sums up much of Uptown in the mid-1970s. Enlargement will show bars and pawn shops stretching to infinity, currency exchanges, stores accepting food stamps, a bar fight, some people ignoring the fight, others gawking, and police vehicles pulled onto the sidewalk. (BTW, the motorcycle bears a Harley Davidson logo.)
This image is dedicated to Chicago’s public servants at the request of Danny Ahlfeld, an Uptown firefighter who has relatives in the police department.
