This was the first shot I took in Uptown. It was at Broadway and Wilson. I walked up to this man and asked him if I could take his picture. He said, “Sure,” and immediately dropped to his knees and struck this prayerful pose – completely unprompted. I quickly dropped to my knee to grab the shot. As I was photographing him, he said, “My name is Jehovah!” It all happened so quickly that I didn’t realize the man was missing parts of his fingers until I developed the film. I’ve always liked the juxtaposition of the man with the gyros sign in the restaurant window in the background.
