I took this shot of a Latin King near Winthrop and Ainslie in 1975. While the Kings never threatened me, I did feel somewhat intimidated by their arsenal. They seemed to have a never-ending supply of guns (like this revolver) and knives, and they loved to be photographed with them. Some people have asked, “Does showing pictures like this glorify gangs and violence?” I don’t have a good answer for that. While I certainly understand and sympathize with the point, I also feel that gang warfare was part of Uptown during this era and that you can’t discuss history without discussing war. Omitting mention of gangs or guns would be like looking at the world through Merlot-colored glasses.
