This Salavation Army bell ringer was standing outside some popular stores near the corner of Wilson and Broadway in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood. I took the shot on Christmas Eve in 1974. I watched her for several minutes before asking if I could take her photo. During that time, I saw numerous people who had taken help from the Salvation Army giving back to the organization. One man that I knew had a drinking problem put ten dollars in the pot, a very large sum in those days. It probably represented a whole days work for him.
