This girl knew how to melt polar ice caps with her smile. Despite the fact that she lived with eight other people (most of them older brothers) in a small apartment, she always seemed to be happy. Some Uptown residents from the mid-1970s have written me to say that they didn’t know what they didn’t have when they were this age. As a consequence, they rarely felt unhappy. The moment when you DO realize what you don’t have is one of the great psychological dividing lines in life.
