I took this photo in Chicago’s Uptown Neighborhood near Winthrop and Ainslie in late 1976. This young lady had a Latin King boyfriend. After taking several shots of the two of them, she asked me to take this shot of her alone on the front steps of this home. The steps seem symbolic to me now. I’ve often wondered if her life went up or down from here. She always seemed very bright, well-spoken and considerate to me. She could have easily fit in with the coeds at Northwestern. But on this day, she found herself surrounded by gangs in Uptown. If anyone knows what happened to her, please contact me so that I can update the caption.
