I took this image in May of 1976 a little more than a month before America’s bicentennial celebration. Flag fever was sweeping America for America’s 200th anniversary. The patriotic spirit even reached into Uptown where this street vendor was doing a brisk business selling flags to some of Chicago’s poorest people.
