Uptown in the mid-1970s was a study in contrast. Architecture once built for the very rich was housing the very poor. People from the South and from Appalachia flooded into Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood looking for work. Instead, many found loneliness on the streets. This man at least had some chewing tobacco to keep him company.
