This grocery store specialized in Philippine food. Many recent immigrants who didn’t yet speak English very well would rely on such retailers to help them get by in a new, strange country. When my grandparents came to America from Czechoslovakia in the 1800s, they relied on a Czech butcher, a Czech baker, etc. In Uptown as elsewhere, there were micro-communities within the larger neighborhood. Note the price for a steak at the Golden Nugget next door – $1.99.
