This fisheye shot was taken from the southbound elevated train platform at Wilson Avenue looking east in May, 1976. This was the commercial heart of Uptown in the 1970s. Enlargement will reveal a Woolworth’s store at the left side of the frame. For young people in the audience, Woolworth’s was the original “five and dime” store, a precursor to today’s dollar stores. Woolworth’s was a pioneer in retailing, founded in the 1870s. The chain went out of business in 1997 when the company decided to focus on its Footlocker business.
