I took this shot on Christmas Day of 1974. Street photography in Uptown always brought surprises. This young girl was playing on her apartment’s front stoop. Despite temperatures in the twenties, she had no jacket. She shivered as I took her photo. Many families in Uptown could not afford clothes or shoes for their children. Still, they managed somehow. After I took this shot, two of the girl’s (very protective) brothers showed up. When they determined that I wasn’t out to harm her, they invited me up into their apartment to take some more pictures.
