Despite the violence and poverty in Uptown, occasionally I met people that still seemed like kind, honest, hardworking, loving people. I could tell immediately that there was genuine love between this father and his daughter. The presence of such parental love tipped the scales for many kids. Without it, they would not have had a chance. They would have been doomed to drugs, drink, gangs.
