This 75-year-old man lived at 1000 West Argyle in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood. I photographed him in February of 1976. I first saw him playing with his dog, Trixie, on the street on this cold, winter day. I snapped a couple candid shots, then engaged him in conversation and took several more close ups. He was a fascinating man. He had fought in North Africa with the French Foreign Legion before settling in Chicago. All dogs love cheese. This man joked that Trixie loved Brie. Trixie looked like she really did. Note the crumbling sidewalk.
