I photographed this Uptown girl near the corner of Broadway and Wilson on Christmas Eve of 1974. She was out doing some last minute Christmas shopping for her family. She seemed too well dressed for the neighborhood. She reminds me of the song “Uptown Girl,” recorded by Billy Joel. But Joel didn’t record the song until nine years later, in 1983. The lyrics in the song are about a working class downtown man trying to woo an Uptown Girl. I think Joel was talking about a different Uptown, but still the sentiments seem appropriate in this case.
