This man was a Native American Chippewa. Many Indians didn’t like being photographed because they were afraid it would capture their spirits, but this man didn’t mind. I photographed him outside the Indian Employment Service which was located at 1046 W. Wilson. He was there looking for work like so many others. He probably lived on the streets or floated between friends’ homes. He listed his address on my model release form as “In care of the Indian Employment Service.” Uptown in the mid-1970s had one of the country’s single largest concentrations of Native Americans. Rumor on the street had it that virtually every tribe in America was represented here.
