During the mid-1970s when I spent four years photographing in Uptown, it seemed alleys and vacant lots where the closest thing the neighborhood had to playgrounds. Of course, there were a few neighborhood schools and Lincoln Park but kids often preferred to play closer to home. Navigating streets filled with drunks and gangs could be far more dangerous than playing in alleys. Note the abandoned furniture and garbage cans that had been tipped over.
