The bookstore in the lower level of this building on Broadway, just north of Lawrence, was one of two bookstores that I know of in Uptown during the mid-1970s. A gentleman whose father owned this store wrote me recently to help identify the locations in several photos. I tried to thank him via email, but the email kept bouncing back! The literacy rate in Uptown during the 1970s limited the market for bookstores. The other bookstore that I know about was the Book Box near the Uptown theater. I was always amazed by how many people signed my model releases with Xs. The first time someone signed with an X, I was shocked. I had never seen this before. It wasn’t long before I realized a large percentage of the people I encountered could neither read nor write.
