It was a cold, February morning in 1976 when I photographed these two men waiting for the ‘L’ at the Argyle station. I loved the freedom that the ‘L’ gave me. I could get most anywhere in Chicago that I wanted, but in winter, those elevated platforms left you exposed to the cold wind. While I have many great memories of Chicago, February winds are not one of them. They’re right down there with freezing toes and the static electricity that zaps you when you take off a sweater.
