This is the biggest stick that I have ever seen an egret carry to his nest. Males begin the nesting season by building a platform for a nest that will impress females.
When the male returns to the nest with a stick, the female will weave it into the nest where she wants it. In the photo below, you can see that this female may actually have problems weaving such a big stick into her nest.
