This shot is looking south from Leland underneath the El tracks along the east side of Broadway. It was taken in 1974. These tracks have become iconic, not only for the neighborhood, but for all of Chicago. Many of the stores along this strip are iconic too. The surplus store, for instance, has served generations of Uptown residents. Those ornamental street lights – symbolic of Uptown’s Gilded Age – also remain to this day. I hope they’re around for my grandchildren to enjoy.
