In late 1974, I took this photo in Chicago’s Uptown Neighborhood of a white man collecting money for the Black Panthers. I believe this shot was taken on Wilson, but the man lived on Lawrence. The Black Panther movement started in the Bay Area in 1966, but quickly spread across the country in the early Seventies. The Black Panthers newspaper had a circulation of 250,000 at its height and was edited by Eldridge Cleaver. The button on the man’s lapel was a political campaign button for Jose Cha Cha Jimanez who was running for alderman after opening a Uptown Community Service Center.
