I had photographed this man on a previous occasion with a rather stern, skeptical expression. But when I encountered him on Christmas Eve of 1974 on Wilson Avenue in Chicago’s Uptown Neighborhood, he greeted me with a warm Christmas smile and allowed me to take several more shots of him. On this occasion, he was grinning and happy. Perhaps he had some festivities planned with family and friends. Christmas seems to bring out the best in people.
