This shot of an egret about to land was taken from approximately 20-25 yards away with a Nikon D4, a 600mm lens and a 1.4x tele-extender, creating an effective focal length of approximately 840mm. Finding fast flying birds within such a narrow angle of view (approximately 3-4 degrees) is the hardest part of bird photography.
